Outdoor recreation is vital to Southeast Alaskan’s lives and livelihoods. Across the country Americans spend $800 billion on outdoor recreation. The region’s incredible landscapes, large amounts of public land, rich culture, and already strong visitor industry puts Southeast Alaska in a position to become a leader in outdoor recreation.
There are many recreational opportunities and assets in the region, including:
- old growth forests
- hundreds of miles of trails
- public use cabins
- amazing wildlife
- fishing
- waterways
All that the region can capitalize on to build a stronger outdoor recreation economy benefiting residents and visitors. Southeast Conference is working to promote the outdoor recreation economy by revitalizing SEATrails, developing a regional outdoor recreation plan and goals, participating in a regional outdoor recreation working group, and following the USFS Tongass Forest Plan update.
