Marine Transportation Advisory Board to hold first Anchorage meeting
(JUNEAU, Alaska) - The Alaska Marine Transportation Advisory Board (MTAB) and officials from the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) will hold its quarterly meeting in Anchorage Dec. 8., marking the first time it has ever been held in Alaska's largest city.
"As we prepare for our Anchorage meeting, we see this as a great opportunity for the community there to learn more about the board and the goals the ferry system is trying to achieve as it continues its efforts to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation of people, goods, and vehicles among Alaska communities, Canada, and the Lower 48," said MTAB Chair Cathie Roemmich.
According to Roemmich, the meeting is open to the public as all are, and she encourages interested Anchorage and other South Central Alaska residents to attend and learn more about the AMHS and the board which she says is designed to serve the travelling needs of all Alaskans aboard the state ferries.
Monday's meeting tentative agenda includes discussion about a vessel replacement fund and additional service to the Aleutian Islands.
MTAB members also include Anchorage residents William T. Beck and John M. Eliason; John C. Conley and William T. Hopkins of Ketchikan; Clay R. Koplin of Cordova; Mike Korsmo of Skagway; Unalaska Mayor Shirley R. Marquardt; Maxine L. Thompson of Angoon; Gerry Hope of Sitka and Robert Venables representing Northern Southeast Alaska from Haines.
"A close working relationship and a constant, open line of communications with MTAB really allows the AMHS to best meet the needs of people who rely on the ferries for their transportation throughout the state and elsewhere," said the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities' Jim Beedle, Deputy Commissioner of Marine Operations.
