Southeast Conference Scholarships
Southeast Conference believes an educated workforce and opportunities for lifelong learning are critical to the region's future. Further, we recognize the important role of the University of Alaska Southeast both as an economic engine for the region and as a key player in workforce development.
In 1992, Southeast Conference, in partnership with the University of Alaska Southeast, established a scholarship program to support residents of the region pursue educational and career goals consistent with our organization's objectives. Scholarship funds have been raised through an auction that is generously supported by individuals and businesses throughout Southeast and conducted each year at the Southeast Conference annual meeting. The 2003 Auction broke all records, bringing in more than $22,000 for scholarships. Coming in a close second with a total of $19,436 raised was the Petersburg Auction.
This Cedar Hat was donated to the 2002 auction by the City of Hydaburg.
The first scholarships were awarded in 1994 and, including those made through the fall 2010 semester; Southeast Conference has awarded over $153,000 in scholarships to more than 173 students attending the University of Alaska Southeast. Recipients have come from the region's largest and smallest communities and include new high school graduates and others retooling for mid-life career changes.
In a move to secure more stable funding for the program, Southeast Conference has established a scholarship endowment fund at the University of Alaska Southeast. We salute our first major corporate sponsor, Alaska Airlines, for its generous $25,000 initial donation to the fund.
